When the Dot NET universal top-level domain extension was first launched in 1985, along with the first domain extensions on the Internet, it was intended to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure companies. As there were no particular restrictions about the usage of the top-level extension, though, .NET domains were reserved and used for different purposes and by lots of people. This extension is an ideal alternative to .COM, especially if the desirable domain with the latter extension is not available for registration.
